Forever

Lyrics

Verse I

Stars are made to shine in night sky,

And flowers made to bloom in the fields.

And some things just aren’t made to last forever.

And there’s no use trying to change the way it is.

Verse II

Cause I’ve seen better men before me broken,

Searching for a lonely pot of gold.

But they don’t know they found the gold already,

And they’re searching for the heart they went and sold

Chorus

So before I’m gone and you can’t hold me,

And I can’t catch your tears

We all know that this can’t last forever,

But we can hold each other while it is.

Verse III

If I could just stop the world from turning,

And stop the days and years from rolling by.

I don’t know that I’d just give up watching

A smile light up in your glowing eyes

Verse IV

Cause flowers never bloom in an instant,

And stars are never born in the blink of an eye

See, all these things that paint the world around us,

They all just take a little bit of time

Ending

So before I’m gone and you can’t hold me,

And I can’t catch your tears...

We all know that this can’t last forever,

But we can hold each other while it is

-

Cause some things just aren’t made to last forever…

But aren’t you glad that that’s the way it is?

Notes

Forever. Few words have raptured the poet so faithfully and for quite as long. I myself am no exception. A word like forever is a poem unto itself.

I think there's something so vivid and terribly real about our nature as finite beings in a world that always outlasts us. There's something so haunting about our plight as little melodies that must come to an end, a part of a symphony that never quite does.

The brevity of our existence juxtaposed the depth of everything it can mean to be. Life is deep, however brief.

"Forever" is often thought about in terms of duration, as though being a really long time. But this song Forever, brings to fore a different aspect of "forever": as finality.

Because I think that the pain of our mortality isn't in just that we are only here for a little while. But in that when we are gone we may truly be that way forever. That we will never again be as were in this life for as long as the world may endure.

That something so precious as a life can truly be lost. Not for a while, not for a time, but forever.

There's a kind of gravity there that I don't need to explain if even I could. This song to me, calls up within me the kind of disposition I most want to take up in the face of life's deepest tragedies. That tragedy that is life itself.

After all, what are we to do in the face of a lifetime that can leave one so worn and embittered, troubled and destitute, before at last claiming what little one has left, and that is yourself?

I suppose that each man's life is an answer to this question, unique in character. Because it's not a question we can answer with mere words and for once and all. We answer it everyday. In every way that we are. In every way that we choose to be.

As the last song on the album, Forever is who I want to be, if I can.

Because as I say, some things just aren't made to last forever...but aren't you glad that that's the way it is?
